My mobile device collection, episode 3: Expansion cards

我的很多设备入手的时候都带有一些附件，扩展卡就是其中的一部分。今天我就向各位晒一晒我攒下的各种扩展卡。

A lot of stuff I collected come with some accessories and few of them are expansion cards. Please allow me to introduce you to my collections of expansion cards.

我收藏有5只索尼记忆棒、其中三只标准记忆棒都是原版的低速低容量记忆棒，分别为8MB，64MB和128MB。这三只里面的8MB的那只是入手HP Jornada 720的时候和MSAC-PC2适配器一起得到的，而其他两只则是来自Clie N710C和T665C。两只高速短棒则是过来凑热闹的（汗），以前曾经用在我的PSP上，现在已经不怎么使用了。两只MSAC-M2转换器是那两只短棒附送的（上面那个双面印字的是白色短棒附带的），白色的256MB Pro Duo本来还有一个精致的收藏盒，可惜后来找不到了。

I have 5 Sony Memory Sticks in my collection. Three of them are original blue Memory Sticks which have 8MB, 64MB and 128MB of capacity. The 8MB Memory Stick comes with HP Jornada 720 along with MSAC-PC2 adapter while other two are from Clie N710C and T665C PDAs. Two Memory Stick Duos are here just for fun. They used to be a part of my PSP journey but now I don't really use them anymore. Two Duo adapter MSAC-M2 are came with those two Memory Stick Duos. The 256MB Memory Stick Pro Duo came with a crafted case but it was lost years ago.

8MB的记忆棒还带有一个盒子，用两只手指一推下，下半部分就会弹开以方便地取出记忆棒，很有意思的设计。

The 8MB Memory Stick has a well-designed case. Slide the two layers of the case it will be wide open like shown in the picture, which makes it easier to take out memory card inside.

这块古董仅支持原版记忆棒，带Pro字样的大容量记忆棒无法读取。有意思的是这张卡是随着我收的那台HP Jornada 720一起来的，也确实是16位的PC卡，但是插到Jornada上却无法识别，嗯。

This ancient part supports original Memory Stick only while Memory Sticks with "Pro" on it won't work. It's interesting that this adapter was came with HP Jornada 720 and it is indeed a 16-bit PC card, but Windows CE refuses to recognize it.

这只PalmOne SDIO网卡是入手Palm Tungsten T5的时候得到的配件，一起附送的还有Palm的红外线无线键盘。在当时只有Palm Tungsten C和后来出来的LifeDrive，TX内置无线局域网，其他的几个（较新的）机型则需要这个网卡实现无线网功能。这块卡的驱动在Archive.org可以找到，安装完驱动（仅支持Palm OS，不支持Windows Mobile）以后就可以联网了。不过要注意的是这块卡仅支持WEP加密，所以在现在这个时代并没有什么卵用。这块卡和Palm通用无线键盘一样，除了PalmOne牌的以外还有个更新一些的Palm牌的版本，功能没有区别。

This PalmOne SDIO WLAN card was a part of a Palm Tungsten T5 deal, with a PalmOne wireless universal keyboard. Back then only Palm Tungsten C, LifeDrive and TX have built-in WLAN module and other models need this card to connect to the network wirelessly. The driver of this card can be found on Archive.org which only supports Palm OS. Be noticed that it only supports WEP encryption which is plain useless nowadays. Like the wireless universal keyboard, it has a later model with Palm brand but no difference between hardware itself.

这个没什么可解释的了，之前入手了一台SONY VAIO C1笔记本，仅内置蓝牙，所以顺便eBay上拍了这么一块Cardbus Wifi卡。得益于凸出的大尾巴信号还是不错滴~只可惜这块卡只支持32位模式，所以插到HP Jornada 720上是无法识别的。我本想买一块16位的WLAN卡，这样的话所有能插PCMCIA卡的设备都能用，但是无奈年代太久远，16位的卡实在是太难找了，而且价格很离谱。

So I acquired a VAIO C1 subnotebook with Bluetooth built-in only. That's why I bid this Cardbus Wi-Fi PC card. The large antenna protruded helps with good reception. Since this card supports 32-bit mode only so it won't work on Jornada. I was hoping to find a 16-bit Wi-Fi card so I can use it on all devices with PCMCIA slot. Unfortunately it's been too long and 16-bit Wi-Fi PC cards are all come with ridiculous prices.

这个就没什么可说的了，这张卡只能用于MessagePad，插到电脑上不会识别。不过可以看到这张卡的印刷质量非常赞，而且比一般的PC卡要轻薄一些。

Nothing serious about this card. It is proprietary to Apple Newton MessagePad and PC won't recognize it. You can see in the pictures it has fantastic build quality and somewhat thinner design than other PC cards.

卡片被插到MessagePad上会显示欢迎信息，内置三个程序，分别是手写输入教程、MessagePad使用说明和一个叫CalliGrapher的游戏，蛮有意思的（是一个排除炸弹的游戏，使用手写单词进行游戏，有助于机器识别用户的笔迹）。

A welcome window pop-up after inserted into a MessagePad. It has three programs which are Handwriting instructor, Guided tour and Calligrapher. Calligrapher is an interesting game that allows you to defuse bombs by writing words on touchscreen which also helps MessagePad to recognize user's handwriting.

这几块才是真正的古董，全部为16位PC卡，容量仅有20MB~40MB。在背面可以看到Sandisk当年还叫Sundisk嘞~而左边的卡竟然还是系列中容量最大的（容量低至1.8MB……）。中间的40MB卡是爱普生的OEM，而最右边的CF卡适配器则是Docomo的品牌。这几块卡的性能都是……实在是太慢了，读写都不到1MB/s，没什么实用价值，放在抽屉里吃灰啦~它们都是和HP Jornada 720附带的配件之一。不过回想一下，1994年主流硬盘的容量也不过2GB，大家还都在用软盘，20-40MB的闪存盘顿时感觉很高大上啊。

Those are dinosaur hardware in digital age. All of them are 16-bit PC cards with capacity between 20-40MB. You can see on the back that Sandisk was called Sundisk in 1994 😛 and the card on the left has the largest capacity in its series (as low as 1.8MB, OMG). The one in the middle is EPSON OEM card while Compact Flash card adapter on the right is branded in NTT Docomo. Those cards are just simply slow. Both reading and writing are less than 1MB/s and basically useless for now. They all came with Jornada. But think about it, in 1994 mainstream hard drives are 2GB and everyone uses floppy disks. Those hardware are really the beast of the age.

最后，谨以此图献给快速发展的存储科技。在这篇文章发布的时候，最大的消费级桌面硬盘容量为8TB，最大容量的的micro SD卡为200GB。再过10年，存储介质的容量会上涨到什么程度呢？

Finally, I would like to show you this picture. Just feel how storage technology come all these years. At the time this article is published, largest consumer hard drive has capacity of 8TB and largest production micro SD card has capacity of 200GB. Imagine what would happen in the next 10 years?
